SURFSIDE — Blake Kukula shot a personal-best 37, medaling and leading Ilwaco to victory at a three-team, nine-hole tournament at Surfside on April 12. The Fishermen’s team score of 186 beat Adna by 16 strokes and Life Christian by 20.

Kukula was one over par heading into the par 5 hole seven. He got into trouble but hit a good bunker shot and birdied the hole. On hole eight, Kukula putted about 30 feet down a slope to get close to the hole for par. On hole nine Kukula ended up behind a tree on the left side of the fairway but recovered. He had about a 10-foot putt with a chance for par, but missed and settled for a one-over par day.

Ilwaco’s Zac Tapio shot a 43, third best at the tournament behind Kukula and Adna’s Logan Boone. Afterward, Tapio said he struggled with drives but putted well. Tenyson Ramsey shot a 52 and Ethan Bannister a 54.

Allison Bonney led Ilwaco’s girls with a 56. Madeline Jacobson shot a 65.

GEARHART — Ilwaco’s Grace Bruncke and Madeline Jacobson reached new heights at an April 11 tournament at the Seaside Invitational Gearhart Golf Links. The two second-year golfers each set a personal best on the front nine. For the 18-hole tournament, Bruncke shot a 119, Jacobson a 123.

Bruncke’s first drive of the day didn’t go far, but she recovered for a six on hole one. On hole three she hit her stride. She hit a long tee shot that went slightly to the left. On her fairway shot she dug the ball out of a valley and got it near the green while avoiding hazards. That set up an easy two-putt for four, giving her a par. She followed with another four on hole four for bogey. Bruncke parred hole seven with another four.

Bruncke’s 53 on the front nine was a personal best for nine holes. She followed with a five on hole 10 and a six on 11. From holes 3 to 11, her score was an even 50, only 15 over par. Afterward Bruncke struggled with sandtraps. She ended up with a 66 on the back nine.

“My drives were better than they have been — after the first hole,” Bruncke said afterward. “I’ve improved in different areas, and I’m just trying to put the pieces together.”

Jacobson hit solid, straight drives throughout the day. She took advantage of the three par three holes at the course, scoring a four on each. Jacobson shot a 58 on the front nine, a personal best. She might have come close to matching that mark on the back nine but for a disastrous hole 12. Jacobson appeared to be headed for a six or seven on the hole until she overshot the fairway and landed in a sandtrap, leading to a 12 score for the hole. Jacobson followed with a nine on 13, but recovered and played solidly the rest of the way.

OCEAN SHORES — Ilwaco’s boys golf team finished second place at Ocean Shores on a windy day in North Beach April 14. Life Christian won the tournament with a score of 192 to Ilwaco’s 208 and North Beach’s 214.

Blake Kukula was the first place medalist with a 42. Kukula parred his first five holes. Like other golfers, he did not score as well hitting into the wind on the last four holes. However, he finished four strokes ahead of second-place Ben Comfort of Life Christian. Tenyson Ramsey shot a 52, Ethan Bannister a 56 and Marcello Lazaro a 58.

There were not enough girls for an official tournament. Ilwaco’s Aslyn Fisher shot a 46, including two pars.
