OCEAN SHORES - Megan Saunders fired the best round of her competitive golf career for the Lady Fishermen as Ilwaco kicked off the 2004 season at Ocean Shores against Hoquiam Thursday. Saunders shot a 58 for the round.

"The weather was wet at times, although there were sun breaks the final two holes," said coach Karl Johnson. "The fairways had casual water in many places."

The inclement conditions made Saunders' score even more impressive.

"Megan shot an 11 on one hole or she could have easily carded a 54," Johnson explained.

But despite the career day for Saunders, the Lady Fishermen lost to Hoquiam 229 to 336.Jennifer Noonan shot a 74 for her opening round and Jenny VanOver shot an 81.

"Noonan finished strong and VanOver continues to show improvement," Johnson added.

Rounding out the Ilwaco total was Brianna Beller's 123.She competed in her first competitive golf ever according to Johnson.

"We had some scheduling conflicts with Loyalty Day so not everyone was able to go to the match. Our team score should improve next week with better weather and a full squad," Johnson concluded.

The Lady Fishermen hosted Montesano Tuesday and travel to Ridgefield Thursday before taking the week of spring vacation off.
