ILWACO The Ilwaco Middle School wrestlers improved to seventh at district after finishing ninth a year ago and claimed second in the small school division for coach Rob Lake in 2010. Joseph Lurf in the 275 pound classification finished second at district and he joins Matt MacDonald at that weight class. Both should be ready to compete well in high school next season, Lake said.
Eighth graders Zach Ahlin at 145 and Eli DeSimone at 155 also had exceptional seasons, only losing two matches apiece and both finished second at district after neither were pinned during the campaign. Riki Thompson at 90, James Weir at 105, and Jazz Parks at 129 also all finished second at district as seventh grade standouts and they should be the leaders next season at the middle school level. Parks gave a huge effort and just barely missed being district champion, Lake said.
Kalobe Norton at 122 was third in district with a great duck-under move to set up numerous take downs according to Lake. Norton, Evan Sutherland at 95, and Gabe Cook at 105 are other young Fishermen to watch for great things during their high school years. Keegan Benenati at 122 placed sixth at district and was a trooper who never quit and always gave it his all according to Lake.
Evan Nation at 136 made big improvements over the season, Jeremiah Black at 129 has the ability to great if he sticks with it, and Kevin St. Clair at 85 suffered a broken collar bone mid-way through the season.
