LONG BEACH - The Lady Fishermen remained undefeated as they swatted Stevenson 5-2 in a Trico League softball contest at Culbertson Field Saturday. The big blows for Ilwaco, who is off to its best start ever, were an RBI triple by Ashley Tapio in the middle of the two-run first inning and a three-run home run over the centerfielder's head that was crushed by Alexa Wirkkala.
Kate Denton led off both the first and third frames with walks and scored both times and Aimee Banuet was also on when Wirkkala laced the line drive to dead center in the third. Denton reached all four times in the fray and was 2-2 for the Lady Fishermen. Banuet and Kady Kirby added singles and Sydney Ward dropped down a bunt for a base hit. Wirkkala also had an RBI single in the first frame to go with her round tripper. Brittnee Pattison reached when she was hit by a pitch and Kelsey Madsen worked a walk.
Erin Kelly at third base, Wirkkala at shortstop, Banuet at second and Madsen at first were stellar throughout the contest, each making difficult plays to keep the Lady Bulldogs at bay. Denton threw out a would-be base stealer and made a tag play at the plate as catcher. Alexis Couch pitched a five-hitter, walked five and struck out two.
Coach Rick Bishop said, "We are improving. We still have one or two shaky innings each game, but our expectations are now much higher. We are beating teams who in seasons past have beaten us." Ilwaco is now 6-0 for the season and 3-0 in league play, with all their Trico tilts being against the Lady Bulldogs. Stevenson drops to 2-6 for the year and is 0-3 in the Trico.
