ILWACO — Eliza Bannister defended home turf, finishing first place at the Black Lake cross-country meet with a time of 22:50.5 seconds. Daniel Whiting took second for the Ilwaco boys. Ilwaco won both the boys and girls team competitions, placing four of the top five runners in the girls’ race.

The first half of the course was steep and narrow through woods up the hill behind Black Lake. After that, runners cut along a flat path toward the highway, then cut back and ran parallel to the lake, mostly along its east side.

Bannister topped a field of 35 competitors, beating Adna’s Lauryn Apperson by 36 seconds. It was Bannister’s first first-place finish in three years of cross country running. She has been in the top five ten times, including second and third place finishes at Black Lake.

Alex Carper took third at 24:00.9. Freshman Carli Kemmer, who placed herself up with Ilwaco’s elite runners for the first time in the previous week’s races, backed up those performances with a fourth-place 24:04.3. Estella Sheldon followed at 24:49.5. Kaytlenn Whelden finished in 25:20.4 for seventh place. Erika Glenn was 12th at 26:29.5, followed by Elle Personius seven-tenths of a second later.

At 18:56.2, Whiting was over a minute behind Adna’s Austen Apperson (17:48), but over a minute ahead of third-place Jachin Heckman of Raymond (20:01.4.) Whiting’s performance time was very strong given the steep course, with its many switches from up to down. Most of the top boys’ finishers were a minute or so off their usual times, and around two minutes off their personal records; Apperson has often finished in the 16-minute range. Whiting finished within a minute of his personal best.

Tristan Trudell didn’t dominate the course in quite the same way but was sixth in a field of 62, at 20:15.2. Ghannon Whelden took eighth at 20:40.1. John Glenn was tenth at 20:59.4, giving Ilwaco four runners among the top 10, compared with two for second place Adna, which had Apperson and the ninth-place Lucas Wellander. Adam Rutherford came in at nineteenth for Ilwaco, giving the Fishermen 35 points to Adna’s 44. Freshman Nate Hopkins was 24th at 22:30.59.

Naselle at Black Lake
