SEASIE — First place finishes by Jack Odneal, Brandon McMullen and Alec Bell led Ilwaco to a second-place team finish at the Pacific Rim tournament in Seaside on Jan. 6-7. Ilwaco’s three first-place finishers at the 15-team tournament were as many as first-place Tigard, an Oregon 6A, had. Ghannon Whelden and Marcelo Lazaro also reached finals for Ilwaco.
Ilwaco finished with 192.5 points, 21 behind Tigard, six ahead of third-place Scappoose, and well ahead of the rest of the field. Odneal, McMullen and Bell each pinned his finals opponent. Nine wrestlers placed for Ilwaco, including Marcus Connor in third.
“[The Pacific Rim] is a tough tournament,” said Ilwaco coach Kevin McNulty. “It’s always been a good measuring stick for local schools. It was the most wrestlers we’ve had in finals at the tournament, the most champs we’ve had, and the most people we’ve had place.”
Wrestling at the Kelso Invite, a major girls’ tournament, on the same weekend, Ilwaco’s Aliscia Bravo went 2-2. “That’s the biggest girls’ tournament in the northwest, with 400 girls entered,” said McNulty. “Girls wrestling continues to grow, and Kelso does a great job with that tournament.”
