ELMA - The Ilwaco girls cross country team won the Elma Invitational for the second straight year and the boys for the fourth consecutive time on the 2.7 mile course there Thursday. The boys stretched their overall win-streak to 29 meets according to Coach Joe Williams.
The Fishermen placed eight runners in the top 13 and scored 18 points to easily lap the field of nine schools. Jordan Williams put on a furious kick the final 200 meters to edge John Hayes for first place in a time of 14:51 to Hayes' 14:55. Dylan Wirkkala was fourth in 15:34, Shaun Peterson fifth in 15:46 and Scott Fagerland sixth in 15:55. Only a third place finish by a Cathlamet runner kept Ilwaco from an amazing sweep of the nine schools in the field.
Carl Jackson was 11th, Mike Huitt 12th, and Stephan Berglund 13th among the 75 runners in the race. Luke Jensen was 24th and Mike Lambert, Robert Gibbons, Robert O'Brien, and Kyle Huitt also completed the race for the victorious Fishermen.
The Lady Fishermen were nearly as dominant as a team scoring 25 points to second-place Naselle's 105. Katie Freese was third in 19:52, Meredith Jensen fifth in 20:35, Monica Millner sixth in 21:01, and Bonnie Perez seventh 21:17. Emily Leonard rounded out the scoring by placing 14th in 22:29. Kat Oja was 15th in 22:43 and Kelly Freese 23rd in 24:43 among the 38 runners in the event.
Jordan Williams said of the Ilwaco performances, "Our team is already having better times than last year and hopefully our off-season training will help us do well in the post season." He added, "The girls did really well and the younger girls are following the lead of Katie Freese when it comes to training and being prepared."
In the middle school race Karl Oman was third, Evin LaPlatney fifth, Mitch Mortenson 13th, and Owen Sutherland 24th among 28 runners. Valori Stromberg was fifth for Ilwaco middle schools girls, Kenzi Wirkkala ninth, and Sydney Ward 11th among 18 runners.
