PUYALLUP — Parker Kaech and Trevor Hutson scored two touchdowns apiece as Ilwaco won its Friday, Sept. 20 league opener over Chief Leschi 45-14. Ilwaco improved to 2-1 overall, while Chief Leschi fell to 1-2.
Ilwaco scored on its opening drive after recovering an onside kick. The Fishermen also recovered the subsequent onside kick, but did not score. They stuck with a run-heavy game plan.
“We were very dominant on the ground early, and we decided to keep running the ball right at ‘em,” coach Sean Cease said.
The Fishermen put the game away with a second-quarter scoring spree.
“Midway through the second quarter we started to hit some big runs,” Cease said. “It got to where we were scoring almost at will.”
Kaech scored on a long run at the end of the half.
“We were really just trying to run the clock out,” Cease said. “[But] he got around the corner and he was gone.”
On the other side of halftime, Kaech returned a kickoff for a touchdown, stretching the lead to 45-0. Ilwaco brought in its backups at that point.
Tanner Brasket had a big all-around game with a fumble recovery, an onside kick recovery and an interception. He also threw a two-point conversion pass to Brady Vinsonhaler after a botched snap on an extra point attempt.
Ilwaco will host Mossyrock Friday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m.
