ILWACO — Erika Glenn dominated the opening minutes, Sunny Kemmer scored 10 points in the last four minutes of the first quarter, and Ilwaco was well on its way to a 74-26 victory over Chief Leschi.
Glenn got a steal and fed a trailing Ebby McMullen for the game’s first points. She stole another one at half-court and took it herself for a layup. McMullen found Glenn for a three-pointer that made it an 8-0 game.
The 5’8” Kemmer feasted near the basket late in the quarter. She twice came open on baseline-inbounds plays and three times scored on put-backs. All five shots were almost identical, with Kemmer catching the ball at the side of the basket and hitting an open bank shot. Ilwaco led 21-2 after a quarter.
“That’s an experienced player who’s been waiting in the wings,” coach Ned Bittner said. “She kept doing a good job being in the right spot.”
Ilwaco extended the lead to 22 early in the second quarter when Ebby McMullen intercepted a pass and pulled up for three.
Kaytlenn Whelden saw the floor and got going in the second quarter. She knocked down a three-pointer, found a cutting Estella Sheldon for an assist, and attacked the basket to get to the free throw line a couple of times.
Tiana Ramsey had a steal at half-court and took it in for a basket shortly before halftime to make it 43-8.
Ilwaco’s starters took the floor again to start the second half. Glenn had a steal and three-point play, then buried a three. McMullen drove around a Kemmer screen for a layup. Glenn got fouled shooting a three and hit two of three free throws, making it a 54-14 game and triggering the running clock with 4:39 in the third quarter.
Ramsey shined as part of a deep-bench group that closed out the game, attacking the basket to score eight of her ten points in the final minutes.
