Quintana wins championship

Daniel Quintana, an Ilwaco High School senior, today captured the title of state cross-country running champion.

PASCO — Daniel Quintana, Ilwaco’s most successful high school cross country runner, won the WIAA 2B state championship meet Saturday.

Quintana won the race as a sophomore in 2019. Covid shutdowns bumped the 2020 season to a shortened version this spring. While there was no head-to-head state contest because the schedule ended at District, the top athletes ran on their home tracks and their times were submitted by their coaches. Quintana’s was the fastest.

Quintana won every race he ran this season.

Three other Ilwaco athletes, all seniors, advanced to state.

Logan Simonson placed 77th.

Two girls who had strong senior seasons raced Saturday.

Emma Brundage placed 17th and Sabrina Lessenden was 24th.

The statement in this article that "Quintana won every race he ran this season" is factually incorrect. He finished 2nd in the Pacific League Championship race at Ocosta on October 21st, losing by 19 seconds to junior Asher Ingram from NW Christian of Lacey.
