WHITE SALMON - The Lady Fishermen, playing their first match in 16 days, whipped White Salmon three games to one Saturday in Trico League volleyball at White Salmon.

"We were intense throughout the match, gained the momentum by winning the second game and the momentum was contagious the rest of the way," a happy Coach Grant Chinn said of his team's initial victory of the season.

The Lady Bruins defeated Ilwaco in a tightly played game one 25-22 and the Lady Fishermen turned the tables in game two, eeking out a 25-23 victory. Game three was a bit easier for Ilwaco, as the 25-15 score indicated, but "We had to battle all the way," Chinn said of the final game his team won 25-23 to secure the match.

"Our teamwork, communication, and passing was incredible," an excited Chinn said. "We wanted the victory more than they did."

Nicole Adams continued to lead the Lady Fishermen by example on the court. The senior had no less than eight kills and many other athletic saves and passes, according to the coach.

"Nikki really hit the ball hard," he stressed.

Ilwaco used a 6-2 offense and the two sophomore setters, Katie Hazen and Marissa Janas, passed as well as the team has under Chinn's tutelage.

"Our inside players did well. Nicole, Rachel Zimmerman, Holly Hocking and Michelle Wroble all hit well and were under emotional control," Chinn praised. Wroble's blocking during the match was especially effective he said.

Carly Taylor played solid defensively despite being under the weather and Monica Smith made a tremendous save and pass as soon as she entered the match, according to Chinn, giving Ilwaco an emotional lift.

"If we can continue to play the way we did tonight we have a good chance of playing in the post season this year," Chinn predicted.

Ilwaco is now 1-3 on the season and 1-2 in the Trico. They visited Woodland Monday and hosted Naselle in a non-league match Tuesday. A makeup game will be played with LaCenter at home Friday at 5:45 p.m. and then Stevenson will visit Ilwaco on Saturday at 1 p.m. Both contests at Aase Gym are changes from the originally scheduled dates or times.

The junior varsity dropped all three games at White Salmon.
