Junior high runners make big strides

Ilwaco Junior High Cross Country runners this year included Matt Kaino, Vicente Fuentes, Luke Jensen, Coach Lani Brown, Monica Milner, Kathleen Oja, Felecia Fagaard, Florence Galvin, Coach Sarah Taylor.

CASTLE ROCK - Ilwaco Junior High Cross Country teams were few in numbers, but big in effort. Kathleen Oja, following in her big sister, Kelly's spike marks, finished second in District IV action at Castle Rock Wednesday.

Oja's time of 8:19 was just six seconds off the winner's effort. Felecia Faggard ran 9:04 on the flat, somewhat sandy 1.2 mile course to come in fourth. Florence Galvin and Monica Milner did not race for the girls, but had a fine season for volunteer coaches, Sarah Taylor and Lani Brown.

For the boys, Matt Kaino finished eighth in District and Luke Jensen came in ninth. Their times were 8:11 and 8:18 respectively, and Vicente Fuentes did not race.

"Kathleen got a red ribbon, Felecia's was bright green, Matt won a brown ribbon, and Luke took home a dark rose ribbon for their efforts," Coach Joe Williams said.
