ILWACO — Ilwaco knocked off Willapa Valley 56-37 Monday, Jan. 6.
Leading 25-17 at halftime, Ilwaco (11-1 overall, 10-0 in league play) broke the game open by winning the third quarter 19-4. The Fishermen extended their 2-3 zone, creating problems for the Vikings (7-5, 6-4) near half-court. On one play, Erika Glenn harried the passer, dropped back toward the middle and picked the pass off, then took off for a layup. Sunny Kemmer took the ball right away at half-court a few possessions later. On offense, Ilwaco started to find openings in the Valley zone, with four different players each knocking down a three-pointer in the quarter.
Kemmer made plays all night, finishing with 11 points, nine rebounds, four blocks and two steals. She blocked a shot in the opening minute, recovering after Brittney Patrick had gotten around her in the low post. She then put Ilwaco on the board at 2-1 with a put-back two minutes into play. Kemmer thrived in semi-transition, running the floor and setting up near the basket before the Valley zone could get into place.
Kaytlenn Whelden had five assists and three three-pointers. Erika Glenn had 19 points, including 12 in the first quarter to lift Ilwaco to a 16-10 lead. Katie Adkins led Valley with 18 points, 10 of them in the fourth quarter.
