RICHLAND - Kylie Lewis fired a round of 98 to finish in at least 16th place at the 1A state golf tournament in Richland Thursday after she shot a 95 on the first day of the tournament for a combined 36-hole score of 193. She was tied for 14th place after Wednesday's round.

By finishing 16th she ties Marissa Janis as the highest finishing girl at state in Ilwaco High School history as Janis also placed 16th in 2006. Lewis was among the top 20 golfers in the 40-person field to make the cut Wednesday. Kelli Bowers of Chelan, defending state champ, had an astronomical 13-stroke lead over the field with a 72 after the opening round.

The complete story on Lewis and on the Ilwaco boys' defense of their state championship will be in next week's Chinook Observer. Final results of both the boys' and girls' state golf tournaments will be posted and an up-dated boys' story will be at www.chinookobserver.com later this afternoon when the tournament is finished.
