KALAMA The Lady Chinooks downed Ilwaco 9-1 and 15-5 in the season finale for the Lady Fishermen softball squad in a Trico 1A League doubleheader May 7. The Lady Chinooks swam to third place in the league and will enter next weeks district tournament, while Ilwaco secured a tie for fifth place.
The Lady Fishermen scored in the second inning in the opener when Hannah Liles led off with a single and came around on a wild pitch and Rachel Thrashers line drive to right field for a base hit. Megan Clark and Jackie Smith also had singles for Ilwaco and McKenzie Dalton had a pair of base hits in the first game.
In the second contest Ilwaco scored three runs in the first frame. Darian Johnson reached on an error, Natalie Tapio got on with a fielders choice and Smith doubled them both home. She later scored when Clark singled up the middle. The Lady Chinooks scored three runs in the top half of the first inning when Morgan VanRiper, Jordyn Vandenberg and Shalese Jorgenson each hit home runs.
The Lady Fishermen tied the game in the second inning when Dalton singled and Jennifer Navarre and Johnson were hit by pitches to load the bases. An error scored Dalton. In the third inning Clark and Dalton singled and Navarre scored Clark with a sacrifice fly.
Clark struck out five and did not walk a batter in the first game. Liles at third base and Smith at first played stellar defense. We can compete with the best of the teams in the Trico. This is the first team where the girls played in our Little League program. We are working on developing a solid softball program. It seems like each game we would have one bad inning like today. The girls worked hard this season and did well in practice, but we will need to just do it consistently in the games, coach Mooch Smith said.
The Lady Fishermen had eight errors in the first game and seven in the second and those miscues led to their demise. Smith, Clark, Liles and Keiana Yasunaka played their final game for Ilwaco as seniors.
Ilwaco finished 6-10 for the year and tied for fifth in the Trico with a 4-10 league record. The Lady Chinooks clinched third place with a 9-5 league mark and they are 9-6 on the season.
