ILWACO — The Lady Fishermen took a 46-5 third quarter lead and overpowered the Lady Hyaks of North Beach 56-23 on Jan. 12.
Shooting guard Hannah Ellsworth opened the game with a three-pointer and blocked a fast-break shot from behind in the early minutes. She stole the ball near the basket and took a contested shot that rolled in at the first-quarter buzzer for a 21-2 lead. Ellsworth finished with 11 in the period, getting to the basket at will. Ellsworth also made a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer for a 41-5 lead.
Center Madeline Jacobson was unstoppable on the boards and got off to a fast start scoring. Makenzie Kaech found her with a pass across the key for an 11-2 lead. On an inbound play, she came open on a screen from fellow six-footer Reece Pierson, caught the pass and scored for a 15-2 lead. Jacobson’s putback gave Ilwaco a 25-2 lead and gave her 10 early points. She finished with 15 rebounds despite not playing the fourth quarter, and scored 14 points in the game.
Kaech played a solid all-around game. In the early going she blocked a shot from behind and intercepted a pass to help Ilwaco establish its defensive dominance. She stole from a defensive rebounder, drove to the basket and converted a three-point play for a 32-3 lead. Beginning with that play, Kaech personally outscored the Hyaks 16-5 over a stretch of possessions, scoring on overpowering moves in the post and drives to the basket. Kaech shot seven for 11 for 18 points, and had five steals.
