RIDGEFIELD Ilwacos score of 286 was 10 strokes off the pace of Ridgefields 276 and 43 behind LaCenters 243 on the Lady Spudders home course at Tri-Mountain Thursday, April 28. There was standing water on every green and on every fairway and most of the cart paths were flooded, yet they insisted that it only started raining about 45 minutes before tee time, Coach Bob Enos lamented.
The girls battled the elements, the course, and their own thinking processes. Many times they were so cold and wet that they lost concentration on shots because after the first hole everybody just wanted to get it done and get out of there.
Amanda Schisler scored a 62 to lead Ilwaco and Jenna Lee followed with a 66. Marina Sonntag came in with a round of 75 and Brooke Weir finished with an 83.
Nearly every girl from all three schools set personal records for getting from the ninth green into the clubhouse and in front of the hand dryer or drinking a cup of hot chocolate to warm themselves, Enos joked. All of our girls could have shaved several strokes off their scores just by concentrating, but the weather conditions defeated all three schools yesterday.
Only two golfers scored below 60 out of 16 competitors. I know that all of our girls were very disappointed in their rounds, but I applaud them for gutting it out and competing to the best that they were able to, Enos said.
Many of the scorecards were soaked and barely readable, so scores were as official as possible, Enos explained. We have until May 16 to get squared away on our all-around game for district and I feel all four girls are capable of shooting good rounds and qualifying for the second day of competition and possibly moving on to state. Kempsey Ward didnt compete yesterday as she had a role in the school play.
LaCenter downs Lady Fishermen golfers 301-350
SURFSIDE Marina Sonntag tied two LaCenter golfers for medalist honors Tuesday, April 26 at Surfside Golf Course, but the Lady Wildcats depth gave the visitors a 301-350 team victory in a Trico League girls golf match. Sonntag carded a 56, Jenna Lee fired a 59 and Amanda Schisler contributed a 65 to Ilwacos score.
Brooke Weir came in with a 68 and Kempsey Ward shot a 102 for the Lady Fishermen. Marina played well and was right in the thick of the competition for medalist honors, coach Bob Enos said. Jenna continues to play well and Kempsey took nine strokes off her previous best score as she continues to improve.
Enos said, Brooke had some very good shots, but made a couple of mental errors and she and Amanda got caught up in a few sand traps that added to their scores. We will continue to work on getting better individually and as a team and get ready for district the middle of next month. We need to concentrate on our short game from 50 to 75 yards in.
Katie Foltun and Lindsie Snider both shot 56 for LaCenter, McKenzie Cross scored a 59, Heather Hassl came in with a 64, and Bryne Dykes shot a 68 for the Lady Wildcats. Natalie Tapio, an eighth grader for Ilwaco, shot a credible 81 and Katlyn Ellyson, who is in seventh grade, fired an excellent 73 against LaCenter junior varsity high school players.
Ilwaco is now 2-3 on the season in dual girls golf matches.
