After a big win Tuesday, Ilwaco High School girls come up short against WinlockIlwaco pelts Lady Wildcats 57-26ILWACO - Ocosta trailed by four, 21-17, early in the second quarter, but from that point on it was all the Lady Fishermen's game as they strolled to a 57-26 SWW League win at Aase Gym Tuesday.
The Lady Wildcats had been getting easy baskets against Ilwaco's full-court press the first 10 minutes of the contest, but a change to a half-court zone exposed the visitors' shooting weaknesses, leading to a 20-2 Lady Fishermen run over the next 11 minutes of the blow out.
Ilwaco limited Ocosta to only three baskets in the final three periods and none in the fourth period as both benches cleared. A double dose of Kitzmans, as in Ashley's 19 and Anna's 12 points, sparked the Lady Fishermen offense. Robyn Unruh added 10, Holly Hocking 8, and Bonnie Perez, Heather Bartlett, Ali Brooks, and Ariel Barker each scored 2 points for the winners.
The Lady Fishermen shot 37 percent on 22-59 and made 12 of 17 free tosses for 71 percent. Ocosta fired a dismal 8-37 (22 percent) for the game from the floor and 3-27 for 11 percent after the first period. They weren't much better from the line, potting 8-25 for 32 percent.
Ocosta had more turnovers than a small bakery, with 29, but Ilwaco wasn't much better, losing the ball 22 times. The taller Lady Fishermen won the battle of the boards 37-27, but were called for 22 fouls to the visitors' 14. Unruh had six of Ilwaco's seven assists. Sophomore Bonnie Perez played well on defense when the Lady Fishermen starting guards were in foul trouble and scored her first two points of her varsity career.
There was no JV game because no officials were available. The Lady Fishermen are now 1-1 and Ocosta falls to 0-4.
