STEVENSON - Ilwaco swept a Trico League doubleheader at Stevenson Wednesday 5-3 and 7-6 to improve their season mark to 5-0, their fastest start in team history. The twin wins in the double dip were the Lady Fishermen's first league contests of the season.

Alexis Couch pitched and won both games, tossing a three-hitter in the first contest and then coming back on short notice to twirl a four-hitter in game two. She allowed one earned run in the initial fray and was slated to rest game two, but an injury to back-up pitcher Sydney Ward put Couch back in the circle. Two of the six runs were earned in game two and all six came in the first frame.

Coach Rick Bishop said, "Alexis pitched well for us. The only bad inning we have played all season was the first one of the second game. We left ground balls play us, every fly ball to the outfield was an adventure, and we threw the ball away a couple of times. In defense of our girls, we have only had three outdoor practices this season and we were playing like we were still in the gym."

Fortunately for the Lady Fishermen they worked out their defensive lapses and came back to chip away for a 7-6 victory in the night cap that was called due to darkness after five innings. In the first game Aimee Banuet led Ilwaco in hitting by going 2-2 and scoring twice. Kate Denton had a single and drove home two runs and Ashley Tapio slammed a triple in the fourth inning, driving in a run to put Ilwaco up 3-1.

Kady Kirby's crucial two-RBI hit with two out in the fourth provided the winning margin. Alexa Wirkkala also singled and scored in the opener for Ilwaco. The second game the Lady Fishermen had seven hits and seven runs, just enough to overcome the 6-0 deficit after their disastrous first stanza. Banuet, Kate Denton, Kelsey Madsen, Tapio, Kirby, Alexa Wirkkala, and Brittnee Pattison each had singles and Kirby and Tapio had two RBI's apiece in the comeback win.

Bishop had praise for the defense of Denton at catcher and Wirkkala at shortstop. He also said Tapio made a running catch in centerfield on the hardest hit ball of the day by Stevenson.
