ILWACO The Lady Fishermen rolled to their 10th straight victory by trouncing Toledo 67-43 in a Trico League girls basketball game in Ilwaco Tuesday, Jan. 11. Elleigh Kaino had a career-high 19 points and dished out nine assists to pace Ilwaco, and Kenzi Wirkkala tallied 17 points and snared 15 rebounds. Alexa Wirkkala rolled in 16 points for good measure.
After Ilwaco had fashioned a 9-2 run in the first period to garner a 13-6 lead, the Toledo closed to within 16-13 early in the second frame. Alexa Wirkkalas first of three treys and Kady Kirbys pair of long-range threes over the next three minutes of play helped extend the Lady Fishermen lead to 26-15 and Toledo would get no closer.
We havent beaten Toledo since Feb. 26, 2005. The reason I remember is that win got us to state that year. This is a new Toledo team with new coaches, but it is nice to get my old nemesis team off my back, coach Ned Bittner reminisced. Elleigh, Kenzi and Alexa all had great nights and Cindy Pacheco came off the bench to give us a defensive lift.
Pacheco scored seven points, including a key three-pointer at the end of the third period to give Ilwaco a 47-30. Toledo had made a 6-0 run led by Brianna Votaw, who would finish 21 points and 18 rebounds. Kirby added six points and Logan Manecke a bucket for the Lady Fishermen. Alexa Wirkkala contributed a pair of assists and five steals to the win.
Ilwaco was 25-62 from the field for 40 percent and 10-14 from the foul line for a credible 71 percent, while Toledo were 16-47 from the floor for 34 percent and were 10-18 from the charity stripe for 55 percent. Toledo out-rebounded Ilwaco by a 40-32 margin, but they turned the basketball over 22 times to Ilwacos 14. Fouls were even at 15 for each team.
The junior varsity won 52-37.
