CASTLE ROCK - Raymond roared to a devastating 21-2 start and then the Lady Seagulls coasted to a 48-33 2B District IV win that eliminated Pacific League champ Naselle in Castle Rock Thursday, Feb. 17. The Comets only bucket in the first 13 minutes, 37 seconds was a Nicole Tarabochia jumper in the lane from an assist by Haleigh See.
Carley Kitzman, two-time Pacific League MVP, was inserted into the lineup after sitting out the first 10 minutes of the contest and she proceeded to lead all scorers with 20 points, seven steals, three rebounds and two assists, but it was too little too late. Kitzman, a junior, eclipsed the 800-point plateau during the second quarter and now has 817 tallies in three years.
Tarabochia finished with eight points and seven rebounds, See had three points and three assists, and Taylor Wasmundt scored two points and had two thefts. The trio of seniors played in their final basketball game for Naselle. Makenzie Matthews and Katie Green each had four rebounds apiece.
The Comets committed 29 turnovers to 23 for the Lady Seagulls and were out-rebounded 40-34. They were 12-48 from the field for 25 percent and 10-16 from the line for 63 percent, while Raymond was 15-48 from the floor for 42 percent and 15-21 from the charity stripe for 71 percent. Both teams were whistled for 15 fouls apiece.
The Comets, who were league champions, finish their season with a 16-7 mark. Raymond will play Toutle Lake for a trip to state regionals Saturday, Feb. 19.
