Talented multi-sport athlete Reigha Niemeyer played her last game in a Wahkiakum basketball uniform when the Mules were eliminated from the District 4 tournament at Castle Rock.
Forks won 71-48, advancing to the next round of the WIAA state qualifying competition while applauding the 1000th career point for 5-10 junior guard Keira Johnson, who was in tears at the free-throw line when she realized her achievement.
But as the Trojans celebrated, Niemeyer had the last word. As time was running out in the fourth quarter, she and her Cathlamet teammates continued playing with vigor. She received the ball some considerable distance from the hoop, steadied and fired in a 3-pointer for the final score of the game.
Niemeyer’s prowess for the Mules has been year-round. She has also been a force on the volleyball court and placed eighth in the javelin at the 2B state track meet last year.
Also concluding their Wahkiakum High School basketball careers were fellow seniors Miya Kerstetter, Selena Salas and Hannah Mendez. The Mules are coached by Rob Garrett and Tiffany Niemeyer.
