NASELLE - The Lower Columbia 12-B baseball team finished third in the Northern Oregon Cal Ripken 11 and 12 years old baseball tournament held in Naselle last Friday and Saturday and they, apparently, will advance to the Oregon State Cal Ripken finals to be held in Dallas, Ore., this coming weekend.
The West Linn 11 year olds' team, which won the tournament, will not be able to attend the state finals so the two teams qualifying to attend are the second place West Linn 12s and the third place Lower Columbia 12-Bs.
The Naselle tournament was originally scheduled to have six teams but one of the teams was a no-show so the tournament was played on a head-to-head format between the remaining five teams. The West Linn 11 team, coached by ex-Oregon State University All American and NBA basketball player Charlie Sitton, won the title with 4-0 record. They defeated the West Linn 12 team in the championship game, and earned a 3-1 record. Lewis and Clark 12-B finished in third place with a 2-2 record. Lower Columbia 11 had a 1-3 record for fourth place, Dallas finished with a 0-4 record.
Tournament director Matt Scrabeck said, "It was a great tournament with some great help running the tournament and with several very capable people filling in to be umpires. With one team not showing up, the schedule had to be readjusted but that worked out well as each team got to play four games. From all indications, everyone had a good time and the community got to see some good games."
