ILWACO — Ilwaco sophomore Makenzie Kaech was named AP honorable mention all-state 2B basketball for the second year in a row. The AP selects a five-player first-team and gives honorable mention recognition to five players at each classification.
The 5’10” Kaech led the Fishermen with 18.8 points per game this year, with a high of 42. She scored from the post and on the wing. On defense, she created havoc all over the court and guarded players of nearly all positions.
Ilwaco fans got to see Kaech and the Fishermen compete against four first-teamers: Kalama junior Kaelyn Shipley made the 1A first team, and Raymond sophomore Karlee Freeman, Toutle Lake senior Sam Woodley, and Wahkiakum junior Peyton Souvenir were all first-team 2B. Junior Jill Townsend of state champion Okanogan won 2B Player of the Year and made first team, and Napavine’s Melissa Lee rounded out the first team.
Joining Kaech as honorable mention were Okanogan’s Jordyn Boesel, Mabton’s Irene Pineda and Desanay Guerrero, St. George’s Hailey Higashi, and Northwest Christian’s Rachel Bozlee.
