MONTESANO - Naselle scored the last six points of regulation to force overtime, but then Napavine rolled in nine points to only one field goal for the Comets in extra minutes to come away with a hard-fought 55-46 second-round District IV game in Montesano Wednesday.
It was the Comets lowest scoring output of the season as the Tigers scratched for every loose ball and every rebound and then shot the lights out from beyond the arc, to boot. Napavine was 19-43 from the floor, but 6-8 from three-point land and made only 11-19 free tosses. The Comets were 18-40 from the floor, but were 4-11 on their three's and they converted 8-12 foul shots.
The Tigers caged Manny Lopez for until the final period when he scored six of his eight points and garnered six of his below-average eight rebounds. Leo Mendoza paced Naselle with 13 points, Drew Macy added 11 and Austin Burkhalter connected for 10. Alan Erickson and Ollie Baker rounded out scoring with three apiece.
Napavine held a 35-28 edge on the boards, but turned the ball over 21 times to 18 for the Comets. Naselle will play rival Cathlamet in a loser-out game Saturday at a time and place to be announced.
