TUMWATER – Naselle bulldozed Lake Quinault 25-12, 25-9, 25-9 in District semifinals Thursday, Nov. 1 to earn a spot at the State tournament.

Naselle led just 10-9 before scoring 24 of the next 27 points to break the match open. Jackie Steenerson and Holly Disch overpowered defenders to help launch that run.

Sophie Scrabeck, who served the final seven points of the first set, served Naselle to a 9-0 lead in the second, with five aces on those nine points. On two straight serves, defenders couldn’t absorb her high velocity. On others, Scrabeck relied on placement, mixing in one that glanced off the net and landed on the sideline. Later Scrabeck guided the ball from the middle to a left-side opening for a kill to go up 16-5.

Steenerson high-pointed a Taylor Gudmundsen set and slammed it for a kill, then spiked the serve return on the next point, as the Comets stretched their lead to 21-5. Disch rose above the net and angled her hit down too low for the defender to complete the 25-9 second-set win.

Naselle continued on the attack in the third set, repeatedly finishing off points with hard shots to the front row to take leads of 7-1 and 15-5. Gudmundsen finished off the victory. She won a point at the net to go up 22-9, then served three straight aces.
