NASELLE - The Comets rolled over rebuilding Raymond 64-27 in Pacific 2B League action Saturday at Lyle Patterson Gymnasium. Manny Lopez continued his string of 12 double-double performances in 14 contests as he led Naselle with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and 11 Comets made the scoring column in the overwhelming win.
Lopez scored the first six points of the contest and after a pair of Ollie Baker treys Naselle was up 16-7 at the end of the first quarter and never looked back.
The Comets won the battle of the boards 39-24 and forced the Gulls into 21 turnovers, while committing only a dozen themselves. Neither team got into the bonus situation in fouls as Naselle was called for 10 and Raymond eight infractions during the cleanly played contest. The Comets were 28-59 from the field for 47 percent, but made a meager 3-10 from the charity stripe. The Gulls canned 12-50 from the field for a flighty 24 percent and pecked away for a sub-par 1-6 from the line.

Rob Baker came off the bench to tally seven points and Ollie Baker and Herrera added six apiece. Lopez, Burkhalter double-doubles flatten North Beach 76-53 NASELLE - Manny Lopez with 18 rebounds and Austin Burkhalter with 11 out-boarded the entire North Beach team to ignite the Comets to a 76-53 Pacific 2B League win at home Thursday. Lopez also scored 27 points for a career-high performance in both categories and Burkhalter tallied 17 points for his fourth double-double of the season, as well.
Leo Mendoza added 14 points, six assists and four steals and Drew Macy kicked in nine markers with three assists to match Burkhalter's assist total for the Comets in the lopsided victory. Coach Brian Macy said, "We did a lot of good things tonight because we played with intensity throughout the game. We blocked out well, played aggressive defense, and our bench players all were productive and gave a great effort."
Assistant coach Scott Smith said succinctly, "We went to our bread and butter and came out on top." The scrappy Hyaks stayed with Naselle for most of the first quarter, knotting the contest at 9-9 six minutes into the fray. Mendoza's steal and assist to Drew Macy broke the tie and Naselle was off and running as they put together a 30-11 scoring binge over the next 10 minutes, bolting to a 44-27 halftime lead.
The Comets shot a season-high 51 percent from the field, going 32-63 and out-rebounded North Beach by a whopping 47-26 margin. Each team committed 16 fouls and both squads turned the basketball over on 13 occasions, but the resounding advantage on the glass and hot shooting was the difference for Naselle.
The Hyaks connected on 19 of 57 tries for a chilly 33 percent from the floor and were 11-17 from the foul line for 65 percent. The only chink in the Comets' armor was at the charity stripe as they were a meager 7-18 for 38 percent. Marcos Herrera added five points and four caroms and Ollie Baker and Chase Chapman each contributed a field goal for the winners.
