NASELLE - Conor Smith and Austin Burkhalter each scored 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Comets past Raymond 57-48 in a Pacific 2B League contest at Lyle Patterson Gymnasium Saturday. The win keeps Naselle in a three-way tie with North Beach and South Bend for the league's top spot at 4-1 and drops the Gulls to 1-4.
A philosophical coach Brian Macy said, "A league win is a league win. You have to give Raymond credit because they out-hustled us and kept it close all the way." Naselle burst to an 11-3 lead with a minute to go in the first period and appeared on their way to a blow-out victory, but no one let Raymond know.
At the 4:12 mark of the second quarter the Gulls tied the game for the first of six times at 17-17, although the visitors never led after making the first free throw to open the contest. With 4:40 remaining in the third period Raymond again knotted the score at 32-32. After a drought of three minutes and 10 seconds when neither team could get into the scoring column, Nick Hines drained a three-pointer and he closed out the third period with a free toss to put Naselle up 36-32.
Raymond got within 36-34 to begin the final frame and that was when Burkhalter went to work to score three consecutive field goals and put his mates in front to stay 42-34. The final three minutes of the fray Burkhalter was 4-4 from the line as was Nate Sultemeier and Smith connected on both of his late foul shots, as well. Naselle was a combined 11-13 from the charity stripe in the pivotal fourth stanza and finished a heady 14-18 in foul shooting for the game (78 percent).
Macy explained. "I was happy to see some fire from Conor (Smith) tonight and Manual Lopez came off our bench to get five rebounds in as many minutes and he gave us a spark, as well. Hopefully we learned from this game about getting good shots off our fast break and about how hard we have to play to compete night in and night out, no matter who our opponent is."
Sultemeier scored 11 and dished out three assists as did Burkhalter, Hines added five points, Alan Erickson four, Macy scored three and dished out six assists, and Randy Hamm contributed two points. Burkhalter led the Comets with six steals. Kevin Newman topped the Gulls with 18 points off the bench and diminutive 5-foot-3 Danny Xaysy knocked down 10 points.
Naselle shot 20-50 from the field, including three treys for 40 percent and was 14-18 from the line, while Raymond was 21-60 for 35 percent from the floor and lost many a chance to get closer by making only 4-11 from the free throw stripe for 36 percent. Naselle out-rebounded the Gulls 42-34, turned the basketball over 18 times to their 19, and each team was whistled for a dozen fouls.
Naselle is now 9-2 for the year and 4-1 in league, while the Gulls fall to 3-9 and are 1-4 in the Pacific.
