OAKVILLE - The Naselle Comets football team completed its season with a 70-0 trouncing by the Oakville Acorns Friday, Nov. 7, on the Acorns' field.
The game was stopped by the "mercy rule" at the end of the first half. In the season opening game played in early September, the Acorns beat the Comets 46-0 in a game also stopped by the mercy rule in the third quarter.
Assistant coach Jeff Eaton said, "There was nothing pretty about this game. Their speed was just too much for us. Then, when they took their first team kids out, their second team still ran over us.
"We were 0 for 6 in our passing, and four of our passes were intercepted for Acorn touchdowns. Co-captain Dan White was our only four-year senior playing and he did well on defense. Seniors Mike Perez and Niel Wirkkala played their first year of football this year and they did well. Our other senior co-captain Derek Johnson was hurt at mid-season and missed the rest of the year. He was our top player when he was hurt."
A highlight of the trip was a stop in the Centralia area for a post-game pizza feed for the team and cheerleaders hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Bob Torppa.
The Comets finished their season with a 0-9 record, with five of the games played as class B 8-man games.
