Naselle finished a mixed week on a high note Saturday by defeating the host school at a volleyball tournament.
After seeing some disappointing trends at the North Beach tourney and a four-set loss to Ocosta Thursday, coach Kim Eaton savored the win.
At Ocosta, Naselle won the first set 25-15. But the home team secured the win by edging past the Comets in two close sets to lead 2-1 then took the fourth 25-16 to win.
“It was a hard-fought, intense match, but we made too many errors at key points of the game,” Eaton said.
Despite the set-back, she said junior Kyryn Jacot was, “100 percent serving, played great defense and showed all-around consistency.”
With 10 digs and three blocks, senior Kendra Leeland added six kills in addition to three ace serves.
Junior Ellie Chapman had a team-high of 10 kills and added 10 digs. Senior Taylor Eaton had 14 assists, seven digs and served seven aces. Junior Amelia Tu’tuu had two kills and one block, while junior Tayler Ford had seven assists.
Naselle places fourth
At the North Beach Tournament Saturday, Naselle placed fourth, but Eaton said erratic serving let the Comets down. They won two and lost three in the preliminary games.
“During pool play they allowed blockers to interfere with their hitting and ended up making more errors trying to bypass the blockers,” said Eaton.
They fell into the consolation bracket after missing 20 serves.
“It is hard to win games when there are so many missed serves,” said the coach. “The girls did refocus and come back strong for the bracket play and ended the day on a positive note.”
To conclude, Naselle enjoyed a win over hosts North Beach 25-21, 25-15. Jacot performed well again receiving serves and defending throughout the tourney, Eaton said.
Cumulative stats showed Chapman with 13 kills. Taylor Eaton had eight assists, four kills, two blocks and six aces. Leeland had seven kills one block and served three aces.
Naselle hosted a rematch with Ilwaco Tuesday, having won the season opener in three sets. Next is a trip north to play Mary M. Knight at Elma 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 29.
