NASELLE — Holly Disch hit an inside-the-park home run, Tayler Ford was a home run away from the cycle, and Morgan Ridgeway went 4 for 4 with 5 RBI, leading the Comets to an 18-2 home win over Taholah in their final league game on May 8. The Comets finished third place at 4-4 in Coastal League play.
Ford tripled in the first, doubled during a six-run second inning, and singled in the third. In the fourth inning, Disch hit a long fly ball that fell near the wall in center field and sprinted around to score for a solo home run that made it 18-2.
The game went four innings. The Comets had already clinched third place and a spot in District playoffs, which start Tuesday of this week at Rainier Christian (after deadline).
Kaylee Barnum hit her 16th home run of the year, had two triples and a double, drove in six runs and scored four in Ocosta’s 15-1 victory over Naselle on May 10. Wildcats pitcher Makenna Fletcher added her second home run and held the Comets to three hits in the five-inning game.
Naselle pitcher Tayler Ford struck out six batters and walked two against Pacific League superpower Ocosta, which improved to 19-1. Most of Ocosta’s lineup made only soft contact against Ford’s pitches, but Barnum, a .678 hitter, could not be contained.
Ford led off Naselle’s first lining a 1-2 pitch up the middle for a single, but the Comets had only two hits the rest of the way. Holly Haataia singled and scored on Abby Moten’s sacrifice hit in the second. Hannah Wirkkala had an infield single in the fifth.
Montesano’s junior varsity team beat Naselle 18-3 and 20-8 in a softball double-header May 9 in Naselle. Montesano is a 1A power, and the team it sent was a level higher than the c-squad the Comets defeated earlier in the year. Tuesday’s double-header, along with Wednesday’s game against Ocosta, gave the Comets tough competition heading into Districts.
