NASELLE - The Comets put on a passing clinic in Naselle last Tuesday as they vaulted to a 22-4 first period lead on their way to a 74-33 vanquishing of Valley. The victory was the Comets' third straight and second consecutive win in Pacific 2B League play.
Naselle had a season-high 22 assists as they executed their offense to near perfection, turning the basketball over a season-low seven times. Kaelee Dearmore led with six assists and Nicole Laney added five in the convincing victory. Laney also had eight steals and 18 points. Carley Kitzman rolled in 19 points and had nine rebounds, Haleigh See came off the bench to knock down 13 and Emily Green contributed 10 tallies. All scored their highest individual point total of the year.
Coach Russ Hickman said, "Our defense is improving and we are still getting used to our offense. Hopefully these wins will be a confidence booster for the girls." Taylor Wasmundt scored five points and had two assists before going out in the second period with an apparent ankle sprain. Nicole Tarabochia had four points and three assists and pulled down seven caroms. Sam Bauer added four points for the winners and Nicolle Best garnered three rebounds.
The Comets forced 30 turnovers for Valley, out-rebounded the Lady Vikings 40-33, and made 31 field goals to 13 for the visitors. Naselle shot 44 percent from the field (31-70), including three three-pointers and Valley was 13-43 for 30 percent. The Comets were 9-16 from the foul line (56 percent) and Valley was five of six from the charity stripe (83 percent). Each team was whistled for 13 fouls apiece.
The Comets JVs played Warrenton as only 11 Lady Vikings suited up. It was no contest as Naselle won 34-9 over the Lady Warriors. Vicki Corona had nine steals and Makenzie Matthews and Kirsten Scrabeck rolled in eight points and Shayla Wilbur scored seven.
