NASELLE — On the strength of a ten-run fourth inning, Raymond came back from an 8-0 deficit to beat Naselle 23-15 in a Friday, May 10 playoff tune-up.
Both teams had more than a week to fill between the end of league play and the start of the playoffs. Naselle, which was unbeaten in 1B Coastal League play and has clinched a trip to state, got some quality competition against Raymond, which finished third in the 2B Pacific League at 7-5.
Naselle led 8-0 after two innings. The Seagulls scored three runs in the third and took advantage of Naselle’s error-plagued bottom of the fourth for 10 runs and a 13-8 lead. Five more runs in the fifth made it 18-9.
The Comets weren’t done. Taylor Gudmundsen’s two-RBI single in the sixth inning cut the lead to 20-15, but Raymond held on and won by eight runs.
Naselle has a bye in the first round of districts and will host district semifinals on Thursday, May 16 at 4 p.m. The Comets will play in either the district championship game or the third-place game in Bremerton on Saturday. Either way, they will be a top-four team in the district and so advance to state in Yakima May 24-25.
