NASELLE — The Comets served 20 aces in their Thursday, Sept. 19 home opener, cruising past Pe Ell 25-16, 25-17, 25-16 to improve to 2-2. Bella Colombo had a team-high five aces. Hollie Haataia led the team with seven kills.

The Comets’ serving edge was decisive in the opening set, when they scored the majority of their points on aces or Pe Ell service errors. The Comets had seven aces in the set, the Trojans none. The Trojans had four errors on their first six serves and six in the set, while the Comets had just four service errors despite many more attempts.

Echo Cenci and Bella Colombo rotated at setter, finishing with eight assists each. With Naselle clinging to a 17-15 second-set lead, Cenci scored on a setter dump behind the Trojans front row, starting a 6-0 run. She chased down another pass for a tough point and a 24-17 lead.

Early in the third, Colombo got to a tough pass and created a big hit for Hollie Haataia for the point. Colombo got on a roll serving, including an ace right on the back line, building a big lead for the Comets. Haataia had six kills in the set. She crushed a ball while keeping it just in bounds, then followed by tapping a shot into open space for a 21-8 lead. She smashed a shot off the hands of a back-row defender to make it 22-11. Kaylin Shrives guided a shot over the head of a diving front-row player for match-point to complete the sweep.
