NASELLE — After easy wins in the first two sets, the Lady Comets came back from way behind in the third to sweep Columbia Adventist Tuesday, Oct. 15. Naselle won 25-17, 25-12, 25-19.
The Kodiaks blocked a Kylee Tarabochia setter dump attempt for a kill to start the third set, then added a couple of aces as they jumped out to leads of 7-0 and 9-1.
Jackie Steenerson responded with a block that Kodiak defenders couldn’t dig out of the net. Hollie Haataia kept momentum going the Comets’ way, pushing a well-placed shot to mid-court; back-pedaling defenders could not recover. A couple of points later, Brynn Tarabochia turned around a tough hit, and Jackie Steenerson finished the point off with a kill to cut it to 9-6.
With the set slipping away from the Comets again at 13-8, Kylee Tarabochia masterfully redirected the ball on second contact for a setter dump that was too quick for the defense to read. Haataia’s bump-over to an unguarded corner cut the lead to one. Finally, the Comets took the lead at 18-17 on Kylee Tarabochia’s ace serve.
Jackie Steenerson got the serve at 21-19 and closed it out with four points, including a pair of aces.
The Kodiaks also kept the opening set close, getting to an 11-11 tie. But the Comets pulled out to a 16-11 lead as Brynn Tarabochia served four straight points, including two aces. Steenerson had the other two points during the stretch, a kill that nicked the top of the net and trickled sideways and another on a straight-down spike, and the Comets cruised to take the set by eight points.
Set two was the most lopsided, as the Comets went on a 13-2 run to build a 22-10 lead and won by 13.
