TOUTLE LAKE - The Naselle Comets could not stop the Toutle Lake Ducks in the early going and ended up on the short end of a 28-12 non-league football game Friday, Sept. 9. The Ducks' James Davidson scored three TDs while gaining 164 yards to counter Naselle's Kyle Burkhalter, who accounted for 183 yards and two TDs in the Comets losing effort.
The Ducks scored twice in the opening quarter and once in the second stanza before the game settled into a more even scoring match. The Comets countered with a Burkhalter running touchdown in the second period and a scoring pass to freshman Nick Hines in the third quarter.
The Comets only trailed by a touchdown after Burkhalter's run for a score in the second period. However, Davidson's running gave the Ducks a larger lead as the game wound down.
Naselle's last score came on a Burkhalter to Hines pass play in the third period. That combination will take on a new role this week when the Comets entertain the high rolling Cathlamet Mules in the K-M Trophy game without the services of Burkhalter who re-injured his shoulder near the end of the TL game.
Coach Robin Andrea said, "Kyle will not be able to play this week as he will rest his shoulder and get his medical condition reevaluated. Nick (Hines) is our backup quarterback and we will work on developing a backup for him this week."
