Ilwaco’s boys and girls cross-country teams both qualified as teams at the District cross-country race at Onalaska Saturday, Oct. 27. Ilwaco’s boys took fourth-place out of 15 qualifying teams, and the girls were fifth of nine.

Tristan Trudell edged teammate Daniel Whiting in a race for the first time since last October 3, taking ninth place (16:39.76) out of 115 runners. Whiting was 11th (16:48.79.)

Alex Carper led Ilwaco’s girls with a 23rd-place finish at 21:31.85, edging Estella Sheldon (21:41.81, 26th) and Carli Kemmer (21:53.36, 27th.)

Carper, Sheldon and Kemmer will return to Pasco after they all finished between 33rd and 37th there last year, as will Kaytlenn Whelden, who was 40th last year and ran in 25:37.1 Saturday. Ilwaco’s other three varsity girls are going for the first time. Nisa Mendoza took 47th Saturday with a personal-record 23:26.2. She and freshman Emma Brundage (23:52.56, 54th) helped keep Ilwaco (118 points) well in front of Adna (159) for fifth place. Freshman Daniela Mendez finished in 26:28.32.

On the boys’ team, Ghannon Whelden took 31st at 17:59.55. Colton McNabb finished in 18:37.89, Logan Simonson in 18:42.83, Brady Rasmussen in 18:55.8, and Anderson Stoddard in 19:29.91. Stoddard, a senior, and the freshmen Simonson and Rasmussen are going to State for the first time. Whiting and Trudell had the boys team’s top performances at State last year, Whiting taking 27th and Trudell taking 39th.
