NASELLE – The Comets took their league opener against Columbia Adventist 25-16, 25-15, 25-13 on Monday, Sept. 24.

Naselle had a rough stretch early, when the Kodiaks came back from down 6-2 to tie it at 10. But Naselle outscored them 15-6 the rest of the set.

In the second, Holly Disch served back to back aces, and Jackie Steenerson got the next point with a smash off the hands of the Adventist back row player. Disch sent a serve to the sideline for another ace and an 8-3 lead. However, the Comets started missing some hits and for the second straight set found themselves tied at ten.

Disch countered with an emphatic hit off the defender’s hands to break the tie, and Jackie Steenerson served aces on the next two points. Sophie Scrabeck soared in the air and crushed another one off a Kodiacs player for a 14-11 lead, then nailed back-to-back aces of her own. Disch followed with an overpowering spike to make it 18-11. Taylor Gudmundsen set one up for Steenerson, leading her into a running leap for an overpowering kill to finish off the second set.

In the third set, Hailey Weston reached across for a spike for an 8-3 lead. This time, Naselle continued piling on. Hollie Haataia came off the bench for a kill that made it 12-4. Kenzie Glenn’s reach-over spike extended the lead to 20-8. Kenzie Glenn served back-to-back aces, one of which went off the head of a Kodiak player, then hit one through two defenders for the match-ending point.
