HOQUIAM - Ilwaco claimed its position among the premiere boys and girls cross country teams in the state as each finished impressively in third place in the Hoquiam Invitational on Saturday.

The boys trailed fourth-ranked Chelan and number-one-ranked South Whidbey, and the girls finished behind the same schools. South Whidbey was ranked second in the state for girls and Chelan fourth.

Derek Duffy finished with an excellent time of 17:03 on the "wet, wet" course, as described by Coach Joe Williams. Duffy claimed fifth place, trailing Michael Dols of Chelan who won in a time of 16:13. The next five Ilwaco boys finished within 28 seconds of each other.

John Hayes was clocked in 17:30 and finished 10th. Jordan Williams came in 12th in a time of 17:45, Shaun Peterson stepped it up to finish 17th in 17:56, a second ahead of Garrett Binion who was 18th, and two seconds ahead of Scott Fagerland who finished 19th. Dylan Wirkkala claimed an outstanding 21st place in 18:13, a time most 2A school performers would be happy to achieve.

Erin Knick whizzed home in 22:33 in 15th place to lead the Lady Fishermen. The first four Ilwaco lady runners were all within a minute and three seconds of each other. Kari Knutzen ran 23:09 and came in 18th, followed by Jillian Guelfi in 23:15 in 19th and Meredith Jensen in 21st place in 23:36.
