Rockets start fast, sink Lady Fishermen

ILWACO —  The score didn’t indicate how close the Lady Fishermen came to winning last Tuesday night’s Trico League game against Castle Rock.

Opening the game on a 6-0 run, the league-leading Rockets came away victorious. However, except for a turnover here and a rebounding mistake there, the score could have easily been reversed with the Lady Fishermen picking up the win.

“We played strong defense holding them to under 40 points, but we gave them far too many second opportunities to score,” coach Ned Bittner said.

Ilwaco managed to score just four points in the first quarter with junior guard Cindy Pacheco accounting for all of the Lady Fishermen’s points. Pacheco finished the game with a team-high 12 points.

The game continued to move slowly through the remainder of the first half and the Rockets went into the break holding a 21-13 advantage. Ilwaco committed far too many turnovers in the second quarter that resulted in Castle Rock baskets.

The Lady Fishermen couldn’t get anything going on offense and were held to single-digit scoring in every quarter.

With 32 seconds left in the third quarter,  a pair of freethrows by Elleigh Kaino shaved the lead to six points, 26-20, and Ilwaco went into the final eight minutes still within range down 28-20.

“We really wanted it, but we just didn’t do some things we needed to do,” junior Grace McPhail said. “I definitely think we could have had that game.”

Senior Kelli Grieve scored four points in the fourth quarter for the Lady Fishermen, including putting the final basket of the game with 1:03 remaining in the contest.

“They were tough, but I thought we played well as a team,” she said.

Kaino scored six points for Ilwaco and freshman Jasmine Coffin also had six.

Maddi Seidl scored a game-high 15 points for the Lady Rockets.

“What it came down to was we just weren’t fighting for loose balls and rebounds like we should have,” Bittner concluded.

Ilwaco loses

heartbreaker at Kalama

KALAMA — Ilwaco held a two-point, 36-34 lead heading into the final quarter Friday night, but was outscored 10-6 in the period to drop a heart-breaking 44-42 decision to Kalama in a Trico League girls basketball matchup.

With the loss, the Lady Fishermen’s record slipped to 4-4 in league games.

Coach Ned Bittner said Ilwaco made a lot of poor passes and the team was not grabbing  the loose balls.

“We had a few possessions where we didn’t even have a chance to set up a play before we turned the ball over,” he said.

The Lady Fishermen started the game like gang-busters, racing out to a 14-8 lead after the first quarter of play.

In the second period, Ilwaco went cold from the floor  scoring just six points, which allowed the Lady Chinooks to mount a rally and take a 23-20 halftime lead.

The third period was another turnaround, scoring wise, for Ilwaco as the Lady Fishermen erupted for 16 points to reclaim the lead heading into the final eight minutes of the game.

The Lady Chinooks again took the lead as the clock wound down, but Ilwaco had a chance to tie the score in the waning moments.

Bittner said Kalama committed a turnover with 17 seconds remaining, which gave him an opportunity to call a time out and set up a play.

“We got the ball to Elleigh (Kaino) and she drove the lane but got stopped at the free throw line,” he said. “We didn’t get a foul called so she put up a shot that unfortunately didn’t go in.”

Kaino finished the game with 11 points and teammate Cindy Pacheco tallied a team-high 13. Logan Manecke hit for nine points and Kelli Grieve had seven.

Hailey Bannister scored a game-high 20 points for the Lady Chinooks.
