Ilwaco and Naselle cross-country teams ran in the Bigfoot Classic at Twin Rocks Friends Camp in Rockaway Beach, Oregon on Tuesday, Oct. 11, a difficult course that produced slow times.

Ilwaco’s Daniel Whiting took third place in the boys race with a time of 20:54, the best performance on the team by almost a minute and a half, leading the team to a second-place finish in a 15-team field. Ilwaco’s Eliza Bannister was seventh in the girls race at 27:52, with Kaytlenn Whelden four seconds behind in eighth. The girls team finished in third of eight teams.

Rachel Disch led Naselle at 29:42, 27th place in a field of 88 runners. Lia Willenbrock was 29th at 30:47.

“[The] team ran with real grit and determination,” said Naselle coach Scott Smith. “The course was in bad shape with hazard everywhere. The girls got muddy but ran hard and pushed themselves.”

Runners went two loops along a tough course. “It had a large, steep hill, with a steep downhill,” said Ilwaco coach Sarah Taylor. Part of the trail ran along a creek and was floodßåed.

Naselle (an independent) and Ilwaco will both race in the Pacific League championships on Thursday, Oct. 20 at Ocosta.
