CASTLE ROCK Dylan Short at 285 pounds and Tayler Odneal at 160 pounds reached the finals at the Castle Rock Invitational Saturday, Jan. 8 and both Ilwaco wrestlers finished second in the 17-school event. Raven Rogers competed at a 36-team wrestling tournament in which 205 girls took part. She lost her first bout, but worked her way back to third place, at 119 pounds, among 30 wrestlers in that weight bracket.
We wrestled better than we did Thursday as we were able to knock some rust off (after a 19-day layoff), coach Kevin McNulty said. As a team we still are not at the level of conditioning we were before the holiday break, but that will come in the next couple weeks.
McNulty stated, We had a solid tournament with two kids in the finals and we finished sixth out of 17 teams. Dylan and Tayler may have tightened up in the finals and did not have their best performances, but both wrestled well to get to the finals. If you lost one of your first two matches, the best you could get was fourth, so we had four guys that finished fourth who only had one loss for the day.
Hunter Stockfleth at 112 pounds finished third and Isrrael Bautista at 125, Josh Berteaux at 130, and Ryan Edwards at 215 each finished fourth in the large tournament. Elliot Marcus earned a sixth place finish at 189 pounds. Castle Rock won the team event with 278 points, Royal was second with 228 from Eastern Washington, Kalama was fifth with 114, and Ilwaco earned sixth place with 107 points.
Rogers followed her opening loss with four consecutive victories in Kelso to move up the ladder to third place in one of the largest all-girls tournaments other than Mat Classic. There was also a junior varsity tourney in Kelso and Jesse Jetland, Austin Woodby, Ben Ahlin, Peter Zeller, Taylor Zinn, Matt Wood, Adam Hernandez, and Sean Shelton all competed. Marcos Merino, Marcus Cox, and Deforest Blume earned third place ribbons.
