DUPONT - Ilwaco's Ryan Kukula shot a 73 on the opening day of the state 1A golf tournament and is tied for second place behind Brett Johnson of Ridgefield, who fired a 71 at Dupont's Home Course Tuesday, May 24. Clark Wilson is tied for fourth place with a brilliant round of 74, Patrick Whealdon is tied for 11th place with a 78, Ross Kukula came in with a 79 and is in a four-way tie for 13th, and Anthony Yoder made the cut with an 85 and is in a four-way tie for 37th.
According to coach Dan Whealdon Ryan Tapio shot an 89 and missed the cut by four strokes, but the WIAA website lists his score as 85 and also tied with Yoder. Assuming Tapio's score is 89 the Fishermen have a commanding lead in the team scoring and are in excellent position to successfully defend their state championship and win their third state title in four seasons.
Ilwaco unofficially has 137.5 team points if the tournament was to end after one day, Overlake is second with 59.5 and has three golfers who made the cut, and King's has 55 points and two players who will compete on day two tomorrow.
Results for the 2011 tournament will be posted as they are received throughout May25 at www.chinookobserver.com.
