NASELLE - The Naselle Comets girls' track team, behind the four first place finishes of junior Erin Saari, placed first in a six team track meet held in Naselle Thursday, March 16. The Saari-led Comets scored 102 points to finish first. Mossyrock finished second with 90 points, followed by Morton with 84, Cathlamet 79, Toutle Lake 78 and Pe Ell 59.

Saari took three individual firsts, in the 100 hurdles (18.3), the pole vault (8-foot-3), and the high jump (4-foot-8) and finished first as a member of the 4x400 relay team (4:56) along with Katherine Herrold, Sylvia Herrold and Kelsey Fletcher. Saari scored 32.5 individual points with her four firsts.

The Comets girls duplicated their four first place finishes with four seconds and four thirds in the season's big opening meet. Finishing second for Naselle were Sylvia Herrold in the 100 (13.3) and the high jump (4-foot-8), Mayu Takami in the 100 hurdles (19.0), and Kelsey Fletcher in the 800 (2:45).

Third place finishes for Naselle were earned by Sylvia Herrold in the 200 (29.41), Narci Carlson in the 400 (1:15.6), the 4x100 relay team (54.79) of Kelsey Fletcher, Takami, Elsa Burchart, and Sandra Rodriguez, and the 4x200 relay team (2:09) of Haley Landis, Burchart, Katherine Herrold, and Rodriguez.

Other Naselle girls' placers included Takami in fourth place in the long jump (13-foot-7) and Katherine Herrold in fifth place in the high jump (4-foot-4).

The Toutle Lake Ducks Chelsi Fletcher dominated the distance events with three firsts, in the 3,200 (12:20), the 1,600 (5:52), and the 800 (2:44) to give the Ducks a big boost.

In the boys meet, Beau Keightley finished second in the javelin (123-foot-9) for the Naselle boys top place in the boys half of the meet. Cathlamet won the boys' meet with 138 points. Toutle Lake totaled 101 points for second place, Morton 88, Pe Ell 88, Naselle 69, and Mossyrock 30 points.

The Comets garnered six third place finishes led by senior Preston Torppa with three individual thirds, in the shot put (33-feet-11 1/4) the discus (87-feet), and the pole vault (9-feet) and as a member of the 4x100 relay team (52.9) with Alex Bennett, Conor Smith and Jeremy Ray. Freshman Smith finished third in the 800 (2:27) as did the all freshmen 4x400 relay team (4:43) of Dustin Parker, Stephan Griss, Gabriel See and Mike Shirley.

The Comets boys earned three fourth place finishes. They were by Joseph Fletcher in the 400 (1:00) and in the long jump (17-feet-9 3/4) and by Shirley in the javelin (109-feet). Five fifth place finishes were earned by the Naselle boys. They were by Ray in the javelin (106-foot-11) and in the pole vault (8-foot-6), Kevin Schei in the discus (78-foot-3), Smith in the high jump (5-feet), and Parker in the 3,200 (12:53). Three Comets sixth place finishers were Shirley in the shot put (32-feet-1 1/2), Patrick Robinson in the discus (69-feet-9), and See in the pole vault (8-foot-6).
