Same teams, same results: Comets girls lose by 30

MATLOCK - The game score Friday was nearly an exact duplicate of the score the first time that the Naselle and Mary M. Knight girls basketball teams met earlier in the year - and with the same result - the Naselle Comets girls losing by a score of 57-27.

Just before Christmas, when the two teams last met, the score was 56-26, with NHS also on the short end of that score.

The game, played in the Matlock school gym, saw the Comets' league record drop to 5-8, possibly still in sixth place in the league and 5-12 overall. The Owls are 8-5 in league, probably in fourth place in league.

The Comets did some things much better than they did a game earlier against Wishkah Valley. Namely, they took care of the ball better with 24 turnovers (contrasted to 46 a game earlier) with only seven in the first half. They also continued to rebound well where Annie Herrold led NHS with 14 rebounds (67 in the last four games) while Toni Abbott and Kelli Revis each added 9 boards.

But shooting continued to be a problem as Naselle coach Bob Torppa said, "We really had a tough time shooting where we only made 26 percent of our shots and 20 percent of our free throws. We played a really good first half. We were deliberate and took care of the ball in the first half. Then we kind of panicked in the second half."

That poor shooting resulted in NHS never getting into double digits during any of the quarters, with 9 points in the first quarter being the high mark. Revis was the only Comet to reach double figures with 15 points. With her 9 rebounds, she was only one board away from a double-double for the game.

The Comets only trailed by 2 points after one period, 11-9, but the Owls added to their lead in each of the next three. A 13-7 second period gave the Owls a 24-16 half-time lead. The Owls then tacked on a 12-6 third quarter for a 36-22 margin, and added a fourth period 21-5 runaway on the way to their 57-27 win.

Torppa said, "If we can play a whole game the way that we play a quarter or two in our game, we will be able to stay with lots of teams. But right now we don't maintain for the entire game."
