COSMOPOLIS Sometimes one stroke can cost you 20 and in this case, it cost IHS a league match.
A mistake on a scorecard cost the Fishermen a league match to Hoquiam at Highland Golf Course in Cosmopolis Oct. 3, 169-189. Kalama also played at the tournament.
On one hole, Ilwacos Brenden Weidner rimmed out a short putt and then tapped in for a 5. His Hoquiam opponent did not see the miss and gave Weidner a 4 on the scorecard instead. Weidners scorecard was then signed without double checking the score, costing Ilwaco 20 strokes and the match.
This was our best score of the year. It is a shame that our golfer took for granted that the number of strokes on his card was correct and their coach wanted our golfer disqualified. All of our kids did very well, coach Dave Hansen stated.
Taylor Schisler finished with a bang at Highland by making birdie, eagle, par and birdie on the final four holes, to finish with a score of 36.
Kenneth Sheldon was also stellar according to Hansen. He fired a round of 41 even as he was in and out of trouble on the challenging Highlands course.
Zac Tapio fired one of his best scores of the season with a 44.
He was steady, as Zac always is, but instead of making bogeys throughout his match, he had a lot of pars to get a score of 44, Hansen explained.
This was my best score of the year, even though I was up and down on a few holes, said Tapio. I have been hitting the greens consistently with my drives and chipping game. My putting was a little shaky, but that is something I will definitely work on. My goal is absolutely to do well at district and make it to state.
Jack Knutzen shot a 68 and Will Price fired a 71, decreasing his score by 30 strokes from the beginning of the season.
Both are freshmen who have never golfed before, said Hansen. They both are playing more aggressively and they are feeling like they are accomplishing something. Playing with kids who are good golfers on our team every day in practice is a big help, Hansen praised. Cody Jahraus also competed for Ilwaco at the junior varsity level.
The Fishermen will travel to Tumwater Valley Country Club Oct. 10 to practice for the district 1A tournament, which will be held Oct. 14 and 15 there. The District IV tournament will be two rounds of 18 holes each, with the top 15 finishers qualifying for the state 1A golf championship next spring.
