Seagulls escape with 55-52 home win over Ilwaco

Ilwaco's Patrick Whealdon puts a move on Seaside's Aaron Chesnut. Whealdon's three-point attempt sailed long and the Seagulls held on to beat the Fishermen 55-52.

SEASIDE - Patrick Whealdon's three-point shot at the buzzer sailed long and Seaside escaped with a 55-52 non-league boys' basketball win there Friday, Dec. 10. The Fishermen had fallen behind 10-3 early and trailed 13-6 at the end of the first period.

Ilwaco proceeded to win the next three quarters, but never led in the contest between two previously unbeaten squads. A Seagull technical foul in the second period allowed a four-point turnaround and the Fishermen closed to within 19-18. A pair of Karl Oman free throws with 5:39 remaining in the game knotted the score at 42-42. With 2:33 it appeared his driving layup again tied the game at 51-51, but instead of receiving a bonus foul shot he was called for an offensive foul and the bucket was waved off.

With nine seconds remaining and Ilwaco trailing 53-52 Ross Kukula appeared to steal the inbounds pass and had a clear lane to the basket, but another whistle instead gave the Gulls two free tosses and the final three-point advantage. Coach Kip Meinhardt was philosophical after the loss, saying, "Hey, that's sports. We played our guts out against a very good and deep team, Ross Kukula and Patrick Whealdon stepped up tonight, and we had four guys (Oman with 13 points and Kyle Breckinridge with 10) in double figures in scoring."

Ilwaco is now 2-1 and Seaside, a 4A team in Oregon, improves to 3-0.
