STEVENSON - Justin Short fired a three-hitter and struck out eight in going the distance in a 9-1 Trico League victory there Friday and he was 3-4 at the plate with a double to boot. The Fishermen, who had smacked a total of 13 hits in the opener, went silent at the plate in the second contest and were no-hit in a 6-3 loss to the Bulldogs in the night cap.
Joining Short at the top of the Fishermen hit parade in the opener was Skyler Olson, who was 2-4 with a triple. Also getting base hits in the lid-lifter were Matt Wood, Marshall Powell, Ryan Tapio, Trevor Couch, Nick Cox, Austin Wirkkala, Christian Dekeyser and Dylan Short.
In the second game Ilwaco plated two runs in the fifth frame on four walks and a hit batsman. On a 3-1 pitch with two outs a Fishermen batter went fishing on an apparent ball four that would have forced in another run according to Tapio, but he popped up for the third out. Corey Dunn plated the final Fishermen run in the sixth inning on a fielder's choice following two walks and a wild pitch for Ilwaco.
"In the first game Justin pitched extremely well. He was pushing off the rubber and threw harder than he has all season by making the adjustment," Tapio explained. "Our entire lineup hit the ball well in the first game, but we were out in front of their pitcher in the second game. We had our chances, but we were impatient at times at the plate. Defensively we made a total of five errors in both games and that is an improvement on what we have been doing."
In the opener Olson singled, stole second and came around on Short's single to open the game. In the third Dekeyser smacked the first varsity single of his career, Olson scored him with a long triple, and Wirkkala's sacrifice fly made the count 3-0. The Fishermen broke the fray open in the sixth on a Cox single, walk and error to load the bases. Wood came through with a two-RBI single, Wirkkala singled home a run, and Short's double plated two more.
Trevor Couch pitched five and one-third innings of relief in the second game, allowing just one unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts. After Tapio and Dunn had walked and Couch was hit by a pitch, Olson and Powell walked to force in two runs in the fifth frame. A walk, two wild pitches, and Dunn's fielder's choice knocked in the third Fishermen run in the sixth of game two.
Ilwaco is now 1-4 in Trico League play and is 2-6 for the season, while Stevenson is 2-3 in league play.
