NASELLE - Playing without the services of their "tall timbers," Fritha Davern and Tiffany Pauly, the Naselle Comettes needed big performances from their outside players and the fill-ins for the missing inside players. They got that as Lucy Rubio returned to the lineup with a rare triple-double and Nora Darcher and Dawn Herman each had double-doubles in the game played Thursday, Jan. 23.

That three-pronged attack was augmented by the play of Abbie Smith, Katie Klinger, and the other NHS players as the Comettes overwhelmed the Oakville Acorns for their 10th Pacific League win of the season. The Comettes 75-20 win improved their league record to 10-0 and their season record to 14-0.

Rubio, shaking off the effects of the flu which kept her out of Naselle's last game, scored 20 points, pulled down 11 rebounds, and made 10 steals for her triple-double. Darcher had a game high 21 points and 13 rebounds as well as adding four assists and four steals. Herman contributed a career high 19 points and 11 rebounds, completing Naselle's pair of double-double performers.

The Comettes got double digit scoring in all four quarters while their harassing defense held the Acorns to single numbers in each of the four stanzas. Naselle led 18-2 after one period, 42-6 at the half after a 24-4 second quarter.

They continued their onslaught after the intermission with a 22-5 third period for a 64-13 lead after three quarters, followed by an 11-7 fourth quarter and their 75-20 win. The Comettes took an amazing number of shots, 85, making 34 of them for 40 percent shooting.

Both of the Comets veteran inside players are hampered by injured and sore ankles and feet at this time. Those ailments will force coach Rob Dalton to give both Davern and Pauly rest whenever possible during the remaining games.

The NHS JVs were beaten by the Knappa JVs 75-29.
