SOUTH BEND - "If we had made just 40 percent of our foul shots and 30 percent of our field goal tries we would have won easily," Coach Bobby Torppa lamented after his Comets dropped a 35-30 Pacific 2B League contest at South Bend Saturday. "As a team we are playing good defensively, but we have to shoot the basketball better to win."
Naselle managed only 3-17 from the free throw line for a miserly 18 percent and were 13-56 from the floor for a mere 23 percent, including only 1-12 from beyond the arc for 8 percent. Despite their shooting woes, Naselle did take the lead in the third period 18-17 and in the final quarter 26-25, only to give up the next six points to the Indians on both occasions.
"We would work so hard on defense to get ahead and then we'd miss four or five shots in a row and they'd be back up by five points. They were ahead the first quarter by five and it seemed like they always were ahead by five. It's frustrating to play so well on defense, but not be able to put the ball in the basket. We could have tossed the ball in the ocean tonight and not hit water."
One player who didn't struggle was the Comets forward Shelby Leeland. She scored 16 points by going 7-12 from the field and 2-4 from the line, while hauling in 10 rebounds for a double-double and also snagging a pair of steals and blocking two shots. "Shelby had a career night," Torppa said of the senior. Nicole Laney added eight points by hitting 4-7 from the floor, but whiffed on all eight of her free tosses.
Lindsey O'Kelley scored a point as she filled in for an ailing Kaelee Dearmore, Nicole Tarabochia added two and Emily Green scored three points for the Comets. Naselle is now 1-2 in league play after dropping low-scoring affairs to the Indians and Valley and is 3-7 overall.
